Sierra Leone
Why does Sierra Leone need your support?
Sierra Leone health and education systems are severely strained. As a result, the country grapples with the world's highest rate of maternal mortality, and a mere 43% of its adult population is literate.
A combination of health crises, conflict, corruption, insufficient infrastructure, and soaring inflation has compounded these challenges, intensifying humanitarian needs in Sierra Leone.
What’s the current situation in Sierra Leone?
Nestled in West Africa, Sierra Leone confronts a series of challenges. Emerging from a decade-long civil conflict between 1991 and 2002, where a civil war displaced two million and claimed over 50,000 lives, the nation saw progress in political stability and infrastructure. However, the harrowing Ebola outbreak in 2014 exhausted healthcare resources, triggering an economic downturn and a surge in gender-based violence.
